Tau Phi Beta was founded at Southern Connecticut State University in 1985. Brothers transferred to William Paterson University and started a chapter their in 1987. Both chapters have since become inactive. Tau Phi Beta's original colors were black, red, and gold at Southern Connecticut State University. When the chapter was founded at William Paterson, the colors were changed to black and silver. Not just black and silver but black and silver camouflage, also known as urban camo, are Tau Phi Beta's trademark colors.
The Gamma chapter of Tau Phi Beta Fraternity was founded February 27th, 1991 by 16 men who wanted more out of their college experience. The founding fathers at Montclair set a standard for all brothers that would follow them. In the 20 plus years that Tau Phi Beta has been part of Montclair State University, it has grown to over 150 brothers. Winning organizational and individual awards over the years, Tau Phi Beta has established itself as one of the top tier fraternities at Montclair.
The brothers pride themselves on being leaders of the campus leaders, always taking the next step to better themselves.
With having been established at 3 different universities and only one remaining active chapter, Tau Phi Beta has faced much adversity in it's 25 plus years of existence. The brothers pride themselves on facing such adversity throughout the fraternities existence and solving all of it's problems along the way. Without having a national headquarters or national representation, the fate of the fraternity rests with the active brothers. With no higher authority, Tau Phi Beta sets it's own rules and governs itself. With the traditions the founders and older brothers left behind, Tau Phi Beta has found its own way to function with only college students running it.
